A Little Lumpen Novelita – Roberto Bolaño

Recommend: Yes.

My first Bolano. A brother and sister are orphaned and are running out of resources and hope. They struggle to forge a new path for themselves.

A small terse novella that is beautifully written. It has a small ensemble of strong characters and a narrator whose voice is so clear it leaps from the page.

I am thrilled to investigate other Bolano’s in the near future.

When I bought this from Stephen I went up with a pile of four other Bolano’s. He sort of tilted his head down in disappointment and asked me to leave some for other people. I shamefully put two back. The collection was donated by a Blackheath Gleebooks regular who gets an obsession for an author and purchases their entire catalogue. I’ve not met this man but feel a kinship with him.

  1. Ooh good review! What does lumpen mean in this context? In german is “rags”.

    1. I was not aware of it at the time but internet research has revealed…

“The word “lumpen” comes from the Marxist term lumpenproletariat — a concept coined by Karl Marx to describe the underclass existing below the working class proper: people who are marginalized, rootless, and disconnected from stable social or economic structures. This includes drifters, criminals, the chronically unemployed, and others living on the fringes of society.”
